What Types of Scenarios Are There?
- Core Scenarios are not set in any specific Region. Twelve Core scenarios are released per year, written under the supervision of the Global Admins.
- Regional Scenarios are set in a specific Region and written under the supervision of that Region's Writing Director. Each Region is expected to release four Regional scenarios per year, and may release a bonus fifth Regional scenario during the year if they meet the deadlines on their first four.
- Adapted Scenarios are based on published adventures, set in either the Forgotten Realms or a generic D&D setting, which have been released by Wizards of the Coast as a commercial product. The LFR campaign produces guidelines and documentation to enable these scenarios to be played in the same manner as a more usual LFR scenario.
- Quest Scenarios are only playable by players who have received a Quest Card and completed the tasks laid out on it. An example of this is the "Zhentarim Infiltration" Player Reward Card.
- Core Special Scenarios are two rounds. There are likely to be three Core Specials per year, each having its premiere at one of the "big three" conventions (DDXP in February, Origins in June and GenCon in August), and they will generally only be available for play at these and selected other large conventions. They are written under the supervision of the RPGA Content Manager, Chris Tulach.
How often are scenarios released, and for how long do they remain in play?
During each quarter of the year the LFR campaign aims to release 3 Core scenarios and also 1 Regional scenario from each Region, for a total of 15 new playable scenarios per quarter. A Region which meets the deadlines for releasing its four standard scenarios will be given permission to release a fifth Regional scenario that year. Thus we can expect to see 12 Cores and from 48 to 60 Regional scenarios released each year, in addition to Quest scenarios, Adapted scenarios and any Special scenarios that may be released. One of the aims of the LFR campaign is to have almost every scenario playable by anyone anywhere, regardless of when or where that scenario premieres. Since the campaign isn't fully launching until late August of 2008, August 2008 to December 2009 is effectively counting as one "year" for the purposes of scenario scheduling. Scenarios released during this time will remain available for play until the end of 2011.
How many of those scenarios can I play with the same character, and how many will it take for them to level?
It will take approximately 25 to 30 successful adventures for a character to progress from 1st level to 11th level, so the average character will be gaining one level for every two-and-a-half to three scenarios they play. At the start of the campaign there will be at least 17 rounds worth of scenarios (most likely a few more than that) supporting play by characters of levels 1 through 4, enough for a single player to get two characters to 4th level (with a few scenarios to spare) if they play all of them. The second wave of scenarios will support play by characters of levels 4 through 7, so should once again provide enough play opportunities for somebody to keep at least two characters fully engaged if they play all of the scenarios that are available to them. With the exception of Quest scenarios there is unlikely to be any restriction on which scenarios any given character can play, though some scenarios may well provide additional benefits for certain types of character.
Can I play the same adventure more that once?
Yes. However, you can only play each adventure once with each appropriate character you possess. And if you DM an adventure, you can now play it afterwards. Just let the DM know at the beginning of the game that you’ve already played it, and don’t ruin the surprises for anyone else that might be experiencing the adventure for the first time.
